Growing up in Chicago, David Gethers lived in a community that was under-served, under-resourced, and under-valued. That community offered little in terms of success, opportunities, and hope. In 1992, he joined the United States Marine Corps as a way of escape. However, due to a life changing injury, his military career would come to an end and back to Chicago he would go.

In April 1996, lost and without a plan, he would get involved in an altercation that sent his life into complete darkness. It took him seventeen years to find his way out of the darkness and into God’s marvelous light.
